Minimum Technology Requirements

Minimum Technology Requirements
Effective Date: August 17, 2026 Applies to: Live, Campus, and Flex Version: 1.1 Delaware Public Benefit Corporation • Principal Office: Washington, DC
These are the technology requirements for Dual Academy online classes. Everything your student needs is listed below, so please check it before the first day. A few minutes now saves a missed class later. If anything here is a problem for your family, tell us at [email protected] and we will help you sort it out.

1.  Computer

A laptop or desktop computer running Windows, Mac, or Chromebook, with the current version of the Google Chrome browser.

A phone or tablet is not enough

Some class tools do not work properly on phones or tablets, and written work and screen sharing are difficult on a small screen. Please plan on a computer for class sessions.

2.  Camera & Microphone

  • A working webcam and microphone. Built into the computer is fine.
  • Headphones or earbuds are strongly recommended. They prevent echo and make discussion easier for everyone in the class.

3.  Internet

  • At least 5 Mbps download and 5 Mbps upload.
  • Test your connection at speedtest.net, from the spot where your student will actually work.
  • A wired connection is more reliable than Wi-Fi if you have the option.

4.  Where Your Student Works

  • Somewhere quiet, where your student can speak up in class without interrupting the household.
  • Light on your student’s face from the front, rather than a bright window behind them.
  • A desk or table. Class runs for a full session, and a bed or sofa makes that harder than it sounds.

5.  Student Account

Dual Academy creates a @newu.university Google account for each student at enrollment. Sign-in details are sent once the signed Consent & Technology Addendum from your enrollment packet is returned. The account is used for Google Meet, class materials, and Populi, where assignments, grades, and attendance live.

Before the first class

  • Return the signed Consent & Technology Addendum so we can send your student’s sign-in details.
  • Have your student sign in to the account and confirm it works.
  • Class communication happens on that account, so please have your student check it regularly.

6.  What to Expect in Class

Classes are taught live in NewU University classrooms that connect students attending online with students attending in person. Your student sees the professor, the classroom, the slides, and their classmates.

Cameras on, and lectures are recorded

A student attending live is expected to have their camera on. Class is a discussion, not a broadcast, and everyone present should be able to see everyone else.

Class lectures are recorded, and students may watch recordings of their own classes. Classrooms use a 360° camera and microphone, so a recording of a lecture with in-person attendance captures the room and the people in it. Only lectures are recorded.

How recordings are stored, who can see them, and how long they are kept is described in our Privacy Policy and in the Terms of Enrollment.

7.  Technology Requirements Checklist

  • Consent & Technology Addendum signed and returned
  • Computer with Chrome installed and updated
  • Webcam and microphone tested
  • Headphones or earbuds ready
  • Internet tested at 5 Mbps up and down or better
  • Quiet workspace with light from the front
  • @newu.university account signed in and working

8.  Need Help?

Reach out before class day, not during it. We would much rather fix it early.
